Dress the Part
Amount: $60.00
Location: LA Greater New Orleans
Age Group: Any Age Group
Donor:
New Orleans Auxilary Board
Not only are students required to wear their school uniforms in New Orleans public schools, many groups such as bands and dance clubs require all participants to dress the part. This can be very expensive for families, contributing to students not being able to participate in something they are passionate about. This gift will be used by a teacher to help his or her students buy uniforms for school, a performance group or a club.

Improv Team
Amount: $220.00
Location: None Specified
Age Group: High School
Donor:
Charlie Todd
I first discovered improv comedy in high school, and i completely changed my life. It gave me confidence. It boosted my creativity. It helped me make friends. It introduced me to my fiancee. Improv is an art form that doesn't require much. There is no set. No props. No technical needs. An improv team simply needs a director, and this gift will support the creation of an impro team. Funds can go to supporting a local improv teacher willing to start a troupe at a local high-need high school. Students will learn the core tenants of improv, which are also excellent life rules. Say yes. Agree with each other. Support each other. Make the other person look good. Improv comedy provides you with a road map to being funny, and also a guide to live your life in a positive way.

Getting on the path to financial literacy
Amount: $100.00
Location: DC Washington
Age Group: Any Age Group
Donor:
Rob Runyan
I would like to sponsor a financial literacy program. It's something I never learned in school and I've realized the importance of it over the last few years as the country has suffered through a financial crisis.
I heard a story a while back on Marketplace (http://marketplace.publicradio.org/display/web/2010/10/19/pm-baltimore-students-invest-in-their-future/), about a school where kids earned money that was put into shares of common stock in some company. The students then followed the stock price and studied why it fluctuated.
I also came across something called The Stock Market Game (http://www.smgww.org/) which appears to simulate much the same thing without actually buying stock. I looked up some fees for schools in the DC area on that site and it appears you can register teams for the spring semester for just $10. The vehicle is less important than the lesson to me. The key lesson is that for kids is how the financial world affects, and is affected by, everyday life. Whether students want to go work on Wall Street or be an artist or doctor, a fundamental understanding of finance is important. Starting this education early is essential for teaching financial responsibility, a lesson that is learned a lot harder later in life.
